Hello Everyone! I have just returned from Romania following up our very successful Spayathon in Bucharest and Tecuci, Romania. Our vets, Dr. Olson from Alaska, Dr. Aurelian Stefan from Bucharest and Dr. Petrisor Stefan from Bucharest spayed/neutered 1352 animals, and trained four more Romanian vets in Tecuci! Dr. Aurelian is performing spay/neuter procedures for Help Labus shelter in Galati and in Braila. He will be continuing the training with the four Tecuci vets. Dr. Aurelian was also a speaker this year at the Humane Society International's EXPO conference in Nashville, TN, on May 12. He presented the work of Romania Animal Rescue and our "Never Say Never" approach to working in Romania. I have another little crippled girl, that we found at a gypsy area outside of Tecuci. We have named her Lucille. She cannot walk on her hind legs very well, sort of as if she is playing leap frog. She is continent and can move around, so I brought her to the APAM shelter in Arad. Lucille stayed at the shelter while Kerry Pember and Disabled Dog Rescue found her a great home in Holland! My trip to Romania was remarkable. Dr. Aurelian and Dr. Pepe Stefan shall carry on with more spay/neuter procedures in Romania with the caravan! Nancy Janes, President, CEO and Founder

Dear Romania Animal Rescue friends, In the last couple of months we have been working hard for the benefit of more than 1500 animals in Romania. Organising the spayathons in Bucharest and Tecuci was not an easy task. More than 2000 people visited our facility and were impressed by our work. Romania is not used to the 600+ spayathons but I hope that in the near future these kind of events will be part of our every day life and will not be something exotic. Every day we receive a lot of calls asking us when we will return for more spay and neuter which is encouraging for our future events. Mid May I attended the HSUS Animal Care Expo conference in Nashville. I spoke about our work here, about our challenges and about our results. It was my first time I spoke in front of more than 100 people from all over the world and my biggest reward was the applause I got at the end of my speech. I am confident that we are on the right way to making a big difference for the Romanian dogs. Our efforts would not be of any value without the help of people like our wonderful supporters and I hope you will continue to sustain our mission in the future too. Dr. Aurelian Stefan, D.V.M

Spayathon Summary
|
Our Spayathons in Bucharest and Tecuci spayed/neutered 1352 animals - in two weeks - thanks to Dr. Olson, Dr. Aurelian Stefan and Dr. Pepe Stefan. The veterinarians trained four vets in Tecuci on spay/neuter techniques, and Dr. Aurelian will return to Tecuci to do more intense training for the vets in that city before we supply them with spay packs. RAR worked with GIA in Bucharest and with Association Tomitsa in Tecuci. Nancy visited the APAM shelter in Arad. What a treasure of peace and serenity this shelter is for the animals! Thank you Cristina and Victoria of APAM for your love of the animals. Nancy brought the little crippled dog that the vets had found in Tecuci, Lucille, to APAM for safe keeping until she could be adopted. Dr. Olson and our reporter friend, Diana, met with Mr. Cenac in Galati and saw his shelter. It is very nice and he has done some great changes. We also went to the Help Labus shelter in Galati, and they are in need of many changes. There are 600 dogs in need of adoption and food. There also needs to be infrastructure changes at Help Labus, and I hope our donors can help these animals by donating funds for food. Their situation is critical, as they are THE shelter that answers pleas for help in Galati for the animals. Nancy and the veterinarians met with the assistant Dean in Iasi at the Veterinary University. He is very interested in having Dr. Olson from the USA go to the University to teach a course for animals to the Romanian students! Dr. Olson will be applying for a Fulbright Scholarship so that she can teach at the Romanian Veterinary University in Iasi! Nancy met with Claudiu Iosim and his mother for a brief time in Arad as well. Claudiu is still in veterinary university in Timisoara.
RAR intends to go back to Galati to spay/neuter for Help Labus the end of May, as well as help with some additional spay/neuter in Braila. Dr. Aurelian will return to Tecuci to do more vet training as well so that the vets in that city will be able to carry on our spay/neuter program there. Nancy has promised spay packs and sutures to the four vets that were trained, but RAR needs to make sure they are prepared with excellent training first. RAR will then be going to Cluj-Napoca and Turda for another spayathon in June. Our spay/neuter campaigns will continue in Cluj-Napoca, Iasi, Turda, Giurgiu, and Tecuci. The cost to sponsor the spay/neuter of all the animals in Tecuci is estimated to be $2000 a month. You can help to defray these costs with a scheduled donation to the Tecuci Spay/Neuter Campaign. All our funds from the Spay Day Photo Contest and other wonderful donations have been used up for these programs. We hope to get more donations to keep the wonderful success for the animals in Romania ongoing! |

Help Help Labus

The Help Labus shelter in Galati cares for 600 dogs, and many cats and horses. That is a lot of mouths to feed every day. As you can imagine, food is desperately needed at the Help Labus shelter in Galati. If you become a food sponsor, then Help Labus can spend their donations on improving the infrastructure of the shelter.

Sending Cara to Canada
These photos are of Cara, a blind Doberman that we have been asked to help. It is believed that Cara was probably used as a breeder dog, and then dumped on the street after her producing days were over (even though she is blind). Dr. Pepe Aurelian spayed her and gave her a thorough exam for transport to North America. She needs a lot of TLC, and this is exactly what Rebecca is offering her in Canada! In May, Cara was transported to Canada to be with Rebecca. She is in Victoria, British Columbia now.

Elizabeth's Big Adventure

Best Friends has published a detailed story on Elizabeth's rescue and subsequent transport to Gibraltar. From being hit by a car, finding a home into which to adopt her, a volcano eruption delaying her transport, Elizabeth has had quite an ordeal. Thankfully, she had the support of Romania Animal Rescue, Disabled Dog Rescue, and many others along the way. Elizabeth needs funding for the cost of a custom fitted cart. RAR would like to furnish her with an Eddies Wheels cart, like Anna Marie and Billy from APAM shelter have. The cost will be approximately $500 with shipping. Any help with the expense for the cart will be greatly appreciated.

I Love Lucille
We found Lucille while in Tecuci doing the Spayathon. She was living in a gypsy area, starving and full of parasites. She ran up to Dr. Nacu's van, and he picked her up. We took her back to the clinic where she was vaccinated, deparasited, fed and given alot of love and attention. Lucille is the most loving dog I have ever met!
She has a slight disability that does not affect her mobility and she is continent. She cannot stand fully erect on her hind legs, but still can walk around. She is currently living at the APAM shelter in Arad until I can find a home for her. She will be having a blood test also, so if anyone can adopt Lucille, you will be very happy with her, and she will be the happiest little girl in the world! She is extremely gentle and kind.
Lucille may be going to Brussels for foster care in June thanks to Kerry Pember and Disabled Dog Rescue. She is currently at the APAM shelter in Arad for safe keeping.
