Who We Are
What We Do
|
Romania Animal Rescue, Inc., a United States 501(c) (3), was founded in 2003 by 3 people from the San Francisco area, following an
eye-opening hiking tour in the country of Romania. Romania Animal Rescue's mission is to establish animal welfare in the country of Romania. We currently have set up a spay/neuter program, free to the public, for any dog or cat in
Romania, and have supplied major funding for the building and upkeep of an animal shelter. We have rehomed many dogs in the USA, although this is not our primary mission.

RAR's goal is to allow the impoverished people of Romania free treatment and spay/neuter of any animal, at our cost, as our funding permits. The current situation in Romania is a disaster for the street animals-dogs and cats.
When Ceaucescu (the Communist dictator in Romania, 1967-1989) was in power, he tore down many small farms and villages and forced their inhabitants to work in factories in the cities as part of his "Industrialization Program". These peasants brought their companion animals with them, but were not allowed to keep the dogs in the block housing provided.
Therefore, the dogs were left on the streets. 40 years later, Romania faces the disastrous consequences of millions of unwanted, abused and neglected dogs, and some cats, who are currently living on the streets in the urban cities. Animal control methods include poisoning and hunting of
dogs. This is not only inhumane, it does nothing for long term over-population control.
Following in the footsteps of the pioneering and compassionate AnnaBell Washburn, Romania Animal Rescue established a
"Neuter and Release" Program to curb the overpopulation of unwanted animals in Romania.
RAR encourages citizens to bring in animals to our veterinarian, Dr. Illeana
Gheorghita, in Galati, Romania, for free spay/neuter and treatment of animals.
