Donation-match campaign, up to $1000, to construct a shelter in Turda.
Hi Nancy,
We landed back in the UK yesterday (June 11, 2011) and are instantly missing Romania. We had an amazing week, thank you so much for putting me in touch with Aurelian. I think we were useful to him and hopefully can continue working with him. I managed to start a little training on the theory side of anaesthesia with Luminita and Cosmina and hopefully can continue this as there is no formal training for Vet nurses/techs in Romania. They have amazing practical skills but could be utilised much more if they had greater background knowledge.
We managed to take out about £1600.00 worth of equipment all donated by Southwest Medical. We took a portable multiparameter patient monitor, an infusion pump with 10 giving sets, a syringe driver and an electrosurgery unit. There were a few other bits and bobs, some donation money, surgical scrub and a few boxes of Frontline but I was most excited about the equipment even though it weighed a ton!
While we were there, we were able to spend a day at the second chance shelter, a couple of days at the clinic in Bucharest and a few days in Craiova. I will let you know how things are going as I am hoping to get involved with Aurelian's vet training programme, maybe adding some nurse training to it! we shall see.
Many thanks
Ruth
Bitza is the stray dog who would be given a drink of water at a restaurant in Romania. Since he was hit by a car, the restaurant owner doesn't want him visiting any longer. Please help him get transported to Denmark for adoption.
This email, sent to Nancy from Mihaela in Ploiesti, Romania, best describes why spay/neuter is the most important and best way to help the animals in Romania:
Dear Nancy,
Without sterilization, tens of hundreds of puppies are brought to the shelter door, without regard. They are sent to a shelter that is dirty, with no special food for puppies, where they die of hunger and thirst because they are too small to handle themselves alone. They die covered by the worms from larvae deposited by flies. There are terrible scenes during the warm season. In winter they die by freezing. This has continued for years. We cannot save all puppies. We have not enough vaccines. They contract parvovirus and distemper and they are not dewormed. It is an ocean of viruses, bacteria and dirt. It is not enough to write it. It is necessary to see the situation.
In a Bucov shelter there are about 600 dogs, 400 unsterilized. The shelter veterinarian refuses to make such operations. He tells us that for a small salary he doesn't want to get tired. He has made errors in surgical operations and the dogs died. He wants only to kill dogs.
In town, the costs of a sterilization is more than I can pay for many dogs. I have more than 100 dogs prepared to be adopted, but they are unsterilized.
