Highlights:

Dear Romania Animal Rescue Supporters and Friends,

First of all, I want to thank each and every one of you for helping the animals in Romania. RAR would be nothing if not for your sincere devotion to helping animal welfare in a country that, until recently, knew nothing of it. Please note: all RAR travel expenses are paid by the founders or donated to us by companies such as Emerald Auto, Romania, and the Romania National Tourist Office in New York City.

I was able to go to Romania in June to get many things accomplished, not the least of which was to get 12 puppies to the "Paws for Peace -- Puppy Summit" held at the Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe, CA on June 21. All the puppies are up for adoption, and most have already been adopted! Thanks to the help of Frances Conroy, who alerted us to the problem of the dogs and puppies at Snagov Forest and funded their rescue, Robert Smith and Antonia of FPCC who sterilized the dogs and sheltered the pups until they could come to the USA, Aura Maratas of Daisy Hope Foundation who got the pups’ papers in order for travel for RAR, and the lovely people at Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe, these puppies are a success story for life!

GALATI:

Upon arrival in Romania, I went to Galati to meet with Dr. Ileana, see the 2 city dog pounds, and meet with the Mayor of Galati once again. Marian helped RAR produce, post and distribute flyers advertising our free spay/neuter and vaccination program in Galati at Maxi Taxi locations, at the University, at warehouses, and the bus station, but we ran out of our 200 flyers! Marian and Geo are making more and will be posting them around town this week. I brought with me 500 red rubber bracelets, which were also handed out in Galati!

RAR purchased $1,000 worth of Frontline product to distribute at the city shelter for the dogs that have parasites. This should be enough product for treatment for the 2nd city shelter, run by Ecosal, for one month. We still need to offer Frontline to Mr. Cenac’s shelter dogs, as well as supply the dogs more Frontline in the future. RAR is making a plea to Charlie Benz, the distributor of Frontline in Northern California, to match our $1,000 donation of Frontline to help the animals in Romania. ACTION: Please help us by contacting Mr. Benz and asking for his support for our program in Romania! Mr. Benz’ email is: charlie.benz@merial.com .

I visited the 2nd shelter, and am very happy to inform you that the situation at this shelter is greatly improved since my last visit in 2004. At that time, there were 15+ dogs per kennel. Now, there are 5 or 6 dogs per kennel, and the shelter is very clean. I made a "surprise" visit, so no one knew I was coming! I told the Mayor and the shelter director for Ecosal about Dr. Richard Bachman coming to Galati in the Fall. Dr. Bachman is the Director of Contra Costa County Animal Services, and is highly recognized as a specialist in animal welfare sheltering. The Mayor asked that Dr. Bachman please meet with him about the shelter(s) when he arrives.

Dr. Ileana gave me one of the puppies that was to travel from Romania with Claudiu Iosim of Animed Arad in April, but could not make the trip due to poor health. Well, this puppy, our little "Lisa" is doing fine now, and I was able to take her back to the USA with me, courtesy of our great friend and donor Melanie!

I found a number of dogs in Galati -- mostly puppies, and one dead dog in the street that was being continually run over by cars. I moved him out of the street to a nearby park…

As you can see, Dr. Ileana is up to her old tricks -- spaying and neutering dogs for RAR! Here is Dr. Ileana’s spay/neuter and treatment summary for April and May.

Sterilizations for April 2007: Total Lei

Passports, vaccines, cips, internal/external parasite exterminations (4 dogs x215 lei) 860.00
Other vet treatments 354.00
Total lei (April) 6,522.93 lei
($2,764.00 USD)
Sterilizations for May 2007

38 female cats (x89.48 lei) 3,400.24

Other vet treatments: 720.60
Total lei (May) 10,423.75 lei
($4,416.84 USD)

Here are two photos of one of the many dogs that were brought in for spay/neuter. (I found this dog on the street on the way to Dr. Ileana’s clinic.) Dr. Karter Neal donated many needed supplies to Dr. Ileana as well -- thank you Dr. Neal!

BUCHAREST:

Street dogs from Bucharest Female with 2 tiny pups

Marian and I went to Bucharest to meet with Carmen and Roxana and visit their shelter, Nature Heritage, located just outside of Bucharest. This is a very nice shelter for the animals, and we were very impressed with Carmen and Roxi’s work! They also have a home for cats.

Carmen and Roxana need to have a new septic system put into place, and will need a lot of straw for the 200 dogs this winter. You may donate to their shelter thru RAR for a tax-deductible receipt in the USA.

Thanks to Mo and Rino, I was invited to an exclusive party to meet the film crew of "Mirrors", being filmed in Romania for 20th Century Fox. I invited Aura Maratas to accompany me, as doubtless many of the film crew would want to get animals out of Bucharest!

Everyone we spoke with was interested in helping the animals. They had been deeply saddened, and Amy, part of the crew from NYC, told me, "I cry every day because of the dogs". Rino gave us a donation, and set up a donations box for RAR at the Castil Studios outside of Bucharest. Thank goodness for good people! I hope to be able to work with many people from all over the world who have witnessed the plight of the Romanian animals!

MEDIA PRO FILM STUDIOS:

I was informed by Frances Conroy that there were many dogs suffering at the Media Pro studios, located in Buftea, Romania. Emerald Auto of Romania and Alex Caragata offered their free services to Romania Animal Rescue and took me to Media Pro to meet with the animals and representatives. I was introduced to some of the dogs by Mihaela, the assistant to Roxana Crisan, Public Relations of Media Pro Studios. We went to find 8 dogs and over a dozen newborn puppies that were full of parasites. One of the workers at Media Pro knew where we could purchase Frontline for the dogs and pups over 8 weeks, so we purchased numerous boxes of Frontline and were able to treat 14 dogs and pups for fleas, ticks, mange, and lice. WOW -- now that felt GREAT! I gave Mihaela funds to spay/neuter the 8 dogs old enough for surgery that I could see there, and am currently arranging with Media Pro for our Dr. Olson from Alaska to set up a spay/neuter clinic at the horse stable for at least dogs in the Fall of 2007. We hope the puppies I met will be ready for sterilization by mid-October (cuz they are going to be sterilized!)

Once again, Frontline saved many dogs from misery, and we would like to ask them to support us by donating to our program in Romania. ACTION: Please contact charlie.benz@merial.com with sincere appeals for donations of Frontline in Romania!

RAR was able to put up our laminated contact information throughout Media Pro so that film crews from around the world can help the animals.

CLUJ:

Claudiu Iosim of Animed Arad, Lynne Delano and members of NUCA, Cluj, Romania all met me at the train station in Cluj Napoca. Also there to greet us was a little cat -- absolutely starving. As luck would have it, Claudiu had a crate that I had loaned him previously, and had planned to give back to me in Cluj. As a joined team, we were able to find a vet (through NUCA), and the kitty was deparasited, had her teeth cleaned, had loose teeth pulled, had her filthy little ears cleaned, and a tumor removed from one of her ears. (One ear was fully infected.) Claudiu offered to take her home with him on the train to Arad, where he could have her spayed, and could care for her until she is strong enough for adoption. Thank goodness to all these great people for their team work.

If you would like to donate to Claudiu Iosim of Animed Arad or NUCA, Romania Animal Rescue has set up US accounts for them, and you can donate through us or through Paypal to their charities.

HOME!

I was met at the airport by Frances Conroy, who had arranged with Best Friends’ Francis Battista, to have a number of Best Friends Animal Society volunteers there to help with the transport from LAX to Rancho Santa Fe of the 13 puppies! Thanks to all this support, we were able to take the puppies to have water, stretch their legs, and eat a good meal upon arrival from Munich! The lovely volunteers and Rory Janes cleaned the crates. Frances Conroy gave us new crates for the pups to go to Rancho Santa Fe and the Helen Woodward Center!

WHAT WE NEED NOW -- FROM YOU, OUR WONDERFUL DONORS

Dr. Stone has offered a matching donation of $2,500 to RAR if we can find a donor interested in meeting her offer. These funds will go to help purchase a land to build an animal sanctuary 30 km outside of Bucharest. We hope to be able to secure this donation, through the help of others!

Funds to continue our spay/neuter program in Galati and now at Media Pro Studios. Our international vets will be arriving in the Fall (Dr. Olson and Dr. Bachman), and we need to have enough suture material, antibiotic, injectible anesthesia, sterile pads, and disinfectant to supply our volunteer vets so that the program can go smoothly.

Antonia from Robert Smith’s FPCC in Romania has offered to train Geo Capatana from RAR on education for grade school students. We would like funds to print educational booklet for the students in Galati, as well as the funds to send Geo by train to Campina for a few days, to train under Antonia. The funds for the train will be approximately $50.

APPRECIATION

In addition to each and every one of the very special people and organizations mentioned above, RAR would also like to express our sincere appreciation to:

  • The PK Foundation, On-Shore Foundation, PETA, Gaea Foundation, HSI and Stichting Wereld Asielen which have given us grants.
  • Pet Food Express for its donation of 4 crates to RAR for use in Romania!
  • Rob Cole of SitesWinger. Rob is more than just our Webmaster, he is a donor and a friend!
  • Gail Barrett for her ongoing support and her assistance with this newsletter for RAR!
  • Cuong, Christy, Hopalong Rescue, and Jolene who have also given/loaned us crates! AJ, Andrew and AnnaBell who donated funds to purchase crates for use in Dr. Ileana in Romania.
  • We have had some much-needed help with getting supplies to Romania! Thanks to our generous donors and supporters, we were able to get enough crates to Romania to get the pups from Snagov Forest to Helen Woodward Animal Center, as well as leave a few in Romania for use there.
  • Rino, Mo, Frances, Roxana, Gia and Mihaela for alerting us to the problems at the film studio locations outside of Bucharest, and for all their help in getting support for the animals. With their help and influence, RAR can help these and many more animals in Romania!

I would also like to extend a special thank you to Simion Alb and the Romanian National Tourist Office in New York City for supplying hotel rooms and meals for me during portions of my trip to Romania. Thank you Alex Caragata of Emerald Auto, Romania, for arranging free travel for me while I was in Romania, and for storing the crates for RAR until we could get them picked up, as always!

All the best, and thank each and every one of you for your help.

Together, we have really done a miracle!
WITH WARMEST REGARDS,
NANCY JANES

ALTHOUGH RELOCATING ANIMALS TO THE USA IS NOT OUR PURPOSE, we feel it is necessary to help the animals who are alive in Romania as best we can, while preventing their births in the first place. We hope that someday in the near future Romania will be in a position to care for its own dogs, but currently, this is not the case. Please remember to adopt animals in your local shelters in the USA, who need loving homes as well!
