This just in...

RAR has contracted to feed the dogs from Mr. Cenac's city shelter. We signed a contract with "Diablo" on February 19, thus supplying $100/month of food products from farms to the dogs. The estimated cost for this is $200, and so we are seeking a sponsor who will help meet our donation with an additional $100/month.

Aside from the group "Help Labus", who can occasionally help feed the pound dogs at both city pounds, there is no help for these animals who are incarcerated.

The mayor of Galati has made a city-wide law that all dogs must be sterilized--thank goodness! To thank Mayor Dumitru Nicolae, please contact him at:

RAR has handed out educational CDs on dog training and care to pet stores and vets in Galati, courtesy of Best Friends Animal Society. I walked around Galati and handed out this CD as well as business cards about our free spay/neuter program. Happily, many people told me they already had taken advantage of our free sterilization program!

I will be returning with a litter of puppies from Galati Sunday. A friend of RAR was alerted to the existence of these pups, living a hellish existence in a cement hole, and I was asked to bring these puppies to the USA. Who could refuse? Thanks to Cindy Shelby and the caring people at the Berkeley Humane Society in California, these pups will have foster homes until adoption! The puppies are 6-7 weeks old. Mama is a shepherd. Since there are not bully breeds here on the streets, Dad was either a shepherd or collie mix. VIEW PICTURES...

Dr. Ileana has treated these little ones for worms and parasites, vaccinated them, and they have their passports to leave with me from Bucharest.

RAR had a report that the bear and monkeys that were at the restaurant in Buzau were now living at the zoo in Targoviste. I went with a friend to the Targoviste zoo, and I am very sad to say the bear and the monkeys from Buzau are not at this zoo. The zoo has not had a donation of an animal since 2005; an asian black monkey was adopted back then. So the mystery of what actually happened to these 2 monkeys are bear from Buzau is still upon us.

Dear RAR Supporters,

This is an action packed month for Romania Animal Rescue! We have a friend who is going to Romania on holiday and has agreed to bring some much-needed equipment to Dr. Ileana in Galati. We need donations of crates (all sizes) and suture material, with and without needles. We hope to get a good batch of materials together--nothing is too much. We just cannot take towels and blankets (except fleece), due to the weight.

As you may know, each sterilization and vaccination of a dog in Galati costs approximately $30 (less for cats, but sometimes more for special circumstances). We are seeking donations to make this program stronger, better and of national interest. Your donations are what keeps us able to help in Romania, and we thank you very much.

RAR would like to honor donors who will pay to have 10 sterilizations done, at a cost of $300, by having your name engraved on a plaque that will hang in Dr. Ileana’s clinic! We intend to have this program ongoing throughout the future, and will be hanging plaques all over Romania as our success ensures spay/neuter of animals!

This way, your generosity will be recognized, and RAR will simply be the conduit for YOUR help.

In honor of a donation of $3000 for the sterilization and vaccination of 100 animals, your name, or the person you specify in honor of, will be engraved on a sole plaque, allowing all to recognize your generosity at our clinic.

Well, speaking of sterilization, we often receive emails from citizens in Romania such as this one:

.....I have 5 puppies now, all younger than 2 months. I don’t have room to keep them. I only have 7 square meters of living space that I’m sharing with my adult son. I can’t keep these puppies in my house and I don’t have any alternative. I’m from Galati and my family lived in Galati for the past 120 years. I would keep them all but is impossible ...... Were can I take them ? I heard that if I take them to the city shelter they will be exterminated or worse they will be meat for the other dogs. Pity, they are so cute, and they are very healthy. In a little while they will need parvovirus vaccination. Do you know anyone that will do it for free? I don’t have money, I don’t have any income for the past 3 years.

..... Acum, am 5 catelusi, sub 2 luni. Nu am spatiu pentru a-i creste. Mi-e Statul Roman, Primaria Galati, mi dat doar 7 mp, camera pt. dormit desi locuiesc cu fiul meu major......Nu am posibilitatea de a-i tine, in casa. Peste putin va trebui sa-i vaccinez contra parvovirozei. Voi gasi oare pe cineva care sa-i vacc. gratis? Eu nu am bani. Am demisionat acum 3 ani.

As it happens, and since our donor will be in Romania to assist with the relocation, RAR has agreed to re-home these 5 pups in need (please read attached email). As you know, this is not our primary mission, but our conscience could not let these pups be abandoned to a fate such as is offered in Romania. We are planning to adopt these puppies out to good homes in the USA.

Photos of these puppies should be available soon, so stay tuned!

If you would be interested in helping to fund their travel to America, this would help all of us out a great deal.

The cost for transporting them to the United States is $200 per crate, and we require 2 large crates and one small carry-on crate for them.

We also hope to have 2 large crates and one small in-flight carry on crate loaned to us by a local San Francisco organization, which we will return. This will be the most cost effective way of getting the puppies to the US.

I hope you can support our programs as you always have. Thank you from the bottom of our Valentine’s hearts!

Sincerely,
Nancy Janes

If you are living in the San Francisco Bay Area, a donation to RAR of $250 will make a star out of your pet, courtesy of Pet Food Expresses "My Mutt" Program--and any animal, mutt or not, is welcome to participate!
