Dear Friends,
I hope you all are well this "tax season"! I have just finished the 2006 taxes for RAR, and they will be on GuideStar as soon as they are recorded with the IRS. Remember, all this information is PUBLIC, and you are entitled to copies of our records at any time.
Now, on with Romania business! Dr. Ileana has given us the latest spay/neuter totals, and as of February 16, she had performed 128 spay/neuter surgeries free of charge for the citizens of Galati! This is a far cry from the 4000 we hope to be able to reach by the end of 2007, but with your unyielding help and support, we still believe we can reach this goal!
Dr. Ileana has generously offered to train vets, free of charge for RAR, on the procedures she has learned from
HSUS and the Mayhew Animal
Home. We would like to get all the vets trained in modern surgical procedures, as well as early age spay/neuter techniques. It is imperative to the success of humane birth control that numerous vets are skilled surgeons in Galati as well as other regions of Romania.
SPANA's outreach program will not be servicing in Romania in 2007, so we need donations more than ever to achieve our
"Neuter or Spay! No More Strays!" goal! Here is a photo of puppies that were brought into Dr. Ileana's office the night I left Galati. This photo is taken of them a week after treatment for starvation and parasites by Dr. Ileana. Where are these puppies to go now? For adoption? I know Dr. Ileana will do her best to place them all, but it is not a likely scenario for people to adopt an animal in Galati, given that the streets are full of animals in need of homes. To one of the pounds? Possibly, if the dog catchers trap them. To the streets? Most likely.
Please help us help them and thousands more like them! Humane sterilization is the only way we can succeed in controlling these unwanted births!
Dr. Olson will be going to Romania in September and October of 2007, instead of April. She will stay in Romania for 3 weeks, and help in Galati and our friends at NUCA in Cluj, Romania. Our deepest and most sincere thanks to
Dr. Karter Neal for her donations of much needed supplies for Dr. Ileana's work, as well as a special thanks to Dr. Olson,
Guide Dogs for the
Blind, Schnuffie
Productions, and Marilyn Dale for their donation of supplies for our 2006 program!
The puppies have all found homes, thanks to our friends at the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society and an RAR volunteer.
Vera now lives with the Shroff family in Livermore, thanks to a chance meeting at the
Dublin SPCA in Dublin, CA; Ileana (formerly Carla) has been adopted by the
Jones family in Santa Rosa, CA, and Nicholae was just adopted into the
Skala family in Walnut Creek!.
RAR has received enough donations to supplement the feeding of the dogs at
Mr. Cenac's for the year of 2007--thanks to the wonderful donations we have received from Barb and Kelly! We have made a request to
MasterFoods,
Romania, (contact@pedigree.ro,
contact@whiskas.ro) for a donation of Pedigree dog food so we may continue to provide food for the animals at the pound. Please hope that our prayers are answered!
Humane Society International
has given us a grant of $1000 to spay/neuter dogs in Galati in 2007!
The additions to our "Plaque of Gratitude" at Dr. Ileana's office this month are: (private donors last names will appear on the plaque as well, but remain confidential in this newsletter for privacy reasons)
For donations of $300 or more, your name will also appear on this publicly displayed "Plaque of Gratitude" so that Galati citizens will know about your generous help to their animals!
We have many great volunteers who are helping by writing grants, doing artwork for RAR sales, advertising us, and helping us in Galati with our program for spay/neuter. A special thank you to those who have given their time to help in our efforts:
In closing, we wish you and your animals the best of health and happiness. We also wish all the animals in Romania, and around the world, the very same chance at health and happiness. They all deserve a chance at a decent life.
Thank you for your support,
Sincerely,
