Dear RAR Friends and Supporters,

This newsletter is dedicated to the memory of Auggie, the beloved dachshund of Eve and Tom Firor of West Virginia. Auggie, your parents miss you dearly!

THANK YOUS GO TO...

Neil Trent and the Marin Humane Society for finding loving homes for all 16 Romanian puppies from Harsova!

Big thank you to Jodie and Dog's on Death Row for all their help with a donation to Dr. Ileana and for their support of RAR!

I would like to extend a special thank you to everyone for allowing RAR to collect enough funds to help Daniela Dargomir with the 25 dogs that are owned by the 85 year old woman outside of Braila! What a great success you have made for her! We will begin spaying and neutering the dogs as soon as possible.

Keith Tyler of Merial® once again donated HeartGard® to RAR for the prevention of parasites in the dogs of Romania! How wonderful of you, Keith, to continue giving this gift to the dogs and cats of Romania!

The Wildlife Center of Virginia for the donation of necessary supplies and surgical instruments to our friends in Romania. We'll always need as many as you can offer us!

We also received a donation of food for Mr. Cenac's dogs from the Foundation Daisy Hope in Bucharest, Romania. Please see Aura Maratas' Christmas for Animals information, from Foundation Daisy Hope in Bucharest!

Thanks to HugaDog  for doing the lovely sketches of Anna Marie, and for making all the note cards for RAR of Anna Marie. Rene, you're the tops! Please support hugadog.org.

Foundation Daisy Hope donated 750 kg. (1650 pounds) of food for RAR to help Mr. Cenac at his shelter in Galati. Thank you for your generosity.

Thank you again to Nancy Eisman for providing Dr. Bachman with his round-trip ticket to and from Romania in May of 2008! Dr. Bachman will be training vets and doing spay/neuter, as well as designing a clinic and animal care shelter for RAR!

Thanks to Cristina Peterson, we are now able to build a clinic and care area for the animals in Romania, horses and other animals as well! Nancy Janes, Cristina and perhaps Charlotte Crucean are going to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in January to learn the dos and don'ts of how to construct and manage the best animal facility possible. Thank you Faith of Best Friends for giving us the opportunity to come!

VAN NEEDED!!!

We have started getting some funding for the purchase of a VAN for the use of RAR in Romania. We are on our way to having an emergency animal pickup in Galati, a spay/neuter van for the countryside, and a horse and burro mobile van, all thanks to the contribution from our wonderful donor, Charlotte Crucean! We need only $5000 more to purchase this ideal van for our mission to begin!

NEWS FROM DR. ILEANA AND ABOUT OUR PROGRAM IN GALATI AND BEYOND

We have great news to tell you! Thanks to Dr. Ileana and Dr. Olson, our spay/neuter program has successfully sterilized 4000 dogs and cats in the city of Galati!

We have also been successful at training 20+ vets in Romania, with our international veterinary program. Dr. Olson's last visit in October of 2007 allowed her to train 18 vets and students, and to demonstrate modern surgical spay/neuter techniques on over 500 dogs and cats in Romania. Cheers to you, Dr. Olson!

Here is the latest count from Dr. Ileana in Galati: Dr. Ileana's translated words are in red:

I started taking English courses so I hope to soon be able to converse in your language. Thank you for all as well giving me reason to learn English at 40 to make communication easier.
Fondly, Dr. Ileana

Dr. Ileana's autoclave (a machine that sterilizes surgical instruments and trays) burned out. She has borrowed one temporarily, but is in need of a new unit so that she can immediately begin to treat the next animal. This is a very expensive, sensitive instrument, which Dr. Ileana will try to purchase in Romania and with your help we will be able to pay for at least a portion (or all) of it.

THANK YOU FROM ROMANIA--THE HARSOVA PUPPIES

I received the following message from Marshall, who is back in Harsova, and wanted to share it with the angels of the puppies, AnnaBell, Neil, Mo, Nancy H., Rory, Gail, Charlotte, Valerie and Melanie. Thank you all so very much for getting them to safe and loving homes!

Marshall Greenman wrote:

Hi Nancy,

I am doing well in Harsova, thanks so much for asking. It is sad, but not surprising, about the vet here...

On a sad note one of our dogs, Shrek, got out of the fence in the night a few weeks ago. When I woke and went outside I find only six of the seven. I found Shrek in a pool of blood in the front of the gate. He had multiple puncture wounds of different sizes and was so exhausted that he couldn't get up. It looked as though he had been attacked by the pack of dogs in the woods nearby. All he could do was wag his tail when he saw me. I had to pick him up and carry him inside. We tried to call the vet but she was not available. This was on a Saturday. I tried to make Shrek as comfortable as I could. I thought that he was going to be ok, since he got up to eat a little bit and had enough strength to go outside to go to the bathroom later that afternoon. I checked on him several times throughout the night to be sure he was covered and warm. Unfortunately, the next morning he passed. He was a favorite of ours. He was such a happy dog. On one hand I am relieved. With all his wounds it was going to take a long, long time for him to recover (it was doubtful that he would have made a full recovery). He is definitely in a better place now. On the other hand I am extremely frustrated that, because of the lack of an accessible vet clinic here Shrek had to suffer. It makes me even more thankful that I was able to find you and your wonderful organization to save those precious puppies. To think that, without your burden for them, they would not be having the opportunity of a wonderful life in California. As I told you before, I do not think that it was a coincidence. Everything happens for a reason. To say thank you seems so inadequate.

Blessings,
Marshall

****Note: Marshall has been sent vials of long-acting antibiotics and doses of Frontline from Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. as a result of this email.

HOPE: INTRODUCING ANIMAL WELFARE TO ROMANIA

Why not make a donation to spay/neuter 3 or 10 strays, and receive a paperback or hardbound version of our new photo book. It makes a great gift for friends and family! This way they will know your gift to them has an extra special meaning, because your purchase helps us to spay/neuter animals in Romania.

NICKY!

Rory and Nancy Janes have received the perfect "gift" from Carmen and Roxi of Nature Heritage of the Future in Bucharest--two new puppies, Nicky and Nica, who now make their home with the Janes'. Nicky is in the spotlight at featured Pet Food Express stores in the San Francisco Bay area! Rory and Nancy love their two new additions, Nicky and Nica! This brings the little family of dogs to 9 at the Janes'.

PHOTOS!

It is one thing to hear about the strays in Romania; it is another to see them. RAR documents photos taken of strays in our Photo Diary

Friends Will Be Friends

Remember the cat that we found at the train station in Cluj? The one that had some teeth pulled and had a tumor in her ear? Well, here she is at home with Claudiu!

Romanian Street Dogs

Here are three photographs of street dogs. The last one shows a female dog that Dr. Ileana neutered. Unfortunately, this dog had already lost her puppies. She was fed milk and hot meal, and now is doing fine.

PLAQUES OF APPRECIATION

This page shows some of the plaques currently hanging in Dr. Ileana's clinic and office in Galati. Our special donors will be known throughout the city of Galati for the accomplishments THEY have made possible to help animal welfare in Romania!

Would you like to have your name on a plaque? For a donation of $300 (10 spay/neuter procedures), you will have your name on a multi-listing Plaque of Appreciation that will hang on a wall in Dr. Ileana's clinic.

For a donation of $3,000 (100+ spay/neuter procedures), you will not only receive your own individual Plaque of Gratitude, but help thousands of animals to stop reproducing and living a life of continual suffering in Romania.

WHAT WE NEED NOW!!!

We are seeking donations of Dormitor in all our locations in Romania for Dr. Ileana, Dr. Valentin in Buzau, and for our friends at NUCA, Animed Arad, Daisy Hope, and Nature Heritage for the Future.

As I mentioned above, we need funding for one big item, a VAN, so that RAR can carry the animals for emergency treatment, spay/neuter treatment, and send vets to the countryside to help in rural and extremely impoverished areas of Romania.

We are still seeking donations for an autoclave for Dr. Ileana's clinic so that she can successfully sterilize her instruments thoroughly and effectively.

Our other needs are:

  • High quality surgical instruments for many vets in Romania
  • A microscope
  • Soluble sutures
  • Collapsible crates
  • Tranquilizer Gun and darts as a humane means to capture the street dogs for sterilization and care ($2,000)
WE HAVE OUR DEAR VETERINARY FRIEND, ANDREEA SLEAHTENEA CURRENTLY VISITING THE USA, AND WE WOULD LIKE TO SEND AS MANY ITEMS BACK WITH HER TO ROMANIA ON DECEMBER 17. THIS WILL SAVE US THE COST OF SHIPPING ITEMS FROM THE USA TO ROMANIA. YOUR HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!

As always, thanks to each and every one of you for your continued, generous support. Every day things are changing in Romania for the betterment of the animals, and it is entirely due to YOUR support!

With warmest regards and a Happy New Year,

NANCY JANES,
Founder

ALTHOUGH RELOCATING ANIMALS TO THE USA IS NOT OUR PURPOSE, we feel it is necessary to help the animals who are alive in Romania as best we can, while preventing their births in the first place. We hope that someday in the near future Romania will be in a position to care for its own dogs, but currently, this is not the case. Please remember to adopt animals in your local shelters in the USA, who need loving homes as well!
