"WENDY"

This month's newsletter is dedicated to the memory, and life, of WENDY who passed over the Rainbow Bridge. Read more about Wendy in the Dedication section below.

We love you!

Dear RAR Supporters and friends,

Spring in Romania means more puppies and kittens! Your generous donations and support to fund Dr. Bachman's trip next month are even more important! We are deeply touched by so many wonderful responses to our pleas for help to fund this trip.

In May 2008 Dr. Richard Bachman, a highly skilled veterinarian who has worked in India and Mexico, and long-time friend of RAR's, will travel to Romania for his second trip to train vets and perform spay/neuter surgeries. Our plan is for Dr. Bachman to go to Bucharest, Buzau, and Sibiu, from May 11-23.

Veterinary supplies are costly and of poor quality in Romania. With your financial help, we can purchase them here for Dr. Bachman so he can train Romanian vets on modern surgical procedures and spay/neuter. I have included a bio of Dr. Bachman below.

Neuter or Spay! No More Strays!

As always, thank you everyone--we simply could not have done all this work without your financial and mental support. Bless you all.

Love,
Nancy

THANK YOU DR. ILEANA AND DR. BACHMAN

I would like to thank Dr. Ileana Gheorghita for taking matters into her own hands and purchasing some much needed equipment for her practice. Dr. Ileana purchased products thru RAR as we could get them for her at a good price, thru ACES. RAR was able to get a large animal veterinarian scale, dog stretchers, and an ultraviolet light for diagnosing skin diseases, for Dr. Ileana.

Thanks to Dr. Bachman for ordering all the supplies for his upcoming volunteer work in Romania, as well as ordering bute and Vitamin B12 for us!

WHAT WE NEED NOW
  • $5000 FOR THE PURCHASE OF A VAN to transport animals in Galati and Braila. We have started helping, albeit on a small scale, in Braila, where the need is extraordinary for animal welfare. RAR needs a van to be able to transport the animals for the people in Braila, and for emergencies in Galati. Braila is located approx. 20 Km from Galati, and therefore is accessible for Dr. Ileana and the Geo/Viorel rescue team!
  • DONATIONS OR FUNDS TO PURCHASE Frontline, Revolution, or Advantage to rid the Romanian animals of parasites so that they may live a decent life.
  • FUNDS FOR THE PURCHASE OF 100 DOSES OF "BUTE" (an anti-inflammatory and pain relieving drug in paste form) for horses. RAR can purchase this medicine "at cost".

NEWS FROM DR. ILEANA IN GALATI

Here is Dr. Ileana's Spay/Neuter report for January 2008. Remember, every $25-$40 donated covers the cost of one spay/neuter (depending on the complexity of the surgery.)

SUCCESS AND MORE! SPAY/NEUTER FOR DOGS OF THE ELDERLY WOMAN IN BRAILA

A few months ago we sent out a plea to our supporters for $1500 to spay/neuter dogs owned by an elderly lady outside of Braila. RAR collected $2500 from you, our generous donors, for this project, leaving us with a $1000 balance which we earmarked for animals in Braila. Dr. Bachman will perform the spay/neuter surgeries on the elderly lady's dogs during his May trip.

RAR is fortunate to have a wonderful friend and colleague in Braila, and we offered to help her with the $1000 so that she could spay/neuter some of the feral and stray animals she cares for there. Because of YOUR generosity, our friend was able to fund spay/neuter surgeries of a number of cats and dogs in this town. She sends you, our wonderful donors, heartfelt thanks! There are two wonderful vets that work for our friend in Braila, and we intend on sending them a "Thank You" certification from all the donors at RAR. Please continue to support our efforts in Braila!

Here are photos of some of the Braila dogs and cats YOU enabled us to help! (Go to our Photo Diary Page to see more photos of these dogs and cats.)

SPREADING THE WORD IN A LOCAL CHURCH

We received this lovely email from Vera, a friend of Romania's animals in Rhode Island - she went out in the bitter cold to spread the word about the plight of Romania's animals! Thank you Vera!

Dear Nancy,

St. John's is a small and beautiful church in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. i was greeted at the door and asked the lady if i could speak with the priest, Onisie Morar. He came to meet me, was very cordial, and asked why I was there. i told him, "I am on a mission," and went on to explain why Romania Animal Rescue was founded and the good works of your organization in Romania. He broke into a big smile. i gave him the calendar, your pamphlets, and a handwritten note from me (on the notepaper you sent with the sketch of a dog). i also enclosed an excerpt from the book OUTERMOST HOUSE by Henry Beston. We chatted for a while; he promised to review the literature; and then moved on to the altar where he sang the liturgy which took about 1-1/2 hours of a two hour mass. It was a beautiful service.

After that i joined the parishioners to receive his blessing. He asked me to leave my phone number which I did. Again, i reminded him of my request to make his congregation aware of the animal issue in Romania and your organization. I also mentioned to him that if he becomes aware of anyone who is an animal activist in the Romanian community to have them call me.

As with all other denominations where attendance is down, there were no more than thirty people in church. Whatever the outcome, I want to believe that I put a bee in their bonnet which will lead to a step in the right direction. It would even more helpful if this could happen in all other states.

Love,
Vera.

NEWS FROM GEO AND VIOREL IN ROMANIA

Dear Nancy,

Here is where the street dogs breed without number. They can have a life full of problems. They can have bad luck from the beginning. Maybe if the people will see these pictures, they will continue to sponsor our goal, so we can continue our program. Neuter or Spay--No More Strays!

Love, Geo

Look at these sweet, loving street dogs and puppies, just trying to survive, through the lens of Viorel's camera.

STORY OF A LOYAL ROMANIAN DOG

Here is a story from Geo and Viorel which will touch your heart. It is a great story which proves that many Romanians love animals!

Dear Nancy,

We told you that Viorel made pictures of a street dog that had a sad and an emotional story. This is the dog that was in car with a lady ho had a terrible accident and passed away (the lady). The dog escape and from then (2 years) he is staying in that place, never moved away. The people heard the story and they stopped and give him food to eat. Viorel made a cage and put there to protect him from rain, wind and all.

Kisses,
Geo and Viorel

AN OPEN LETTER FROM EIGHT ROMANIAN PUPPIES

Dear RAR people,

Our story begins 2 months and a half ago. Our life was, from the beginning, a treadmill. We are 8 brothers and sisters and we are living in a yard of a Hospital in Galati, Romania between riff-raff and something that our mum told us to be very careful of: CAR!

From what we saw until now, LIFE is not like we understood from mum's stories, in the colds nights of the winter. No one told us we will not have a home, no one told us the food and water will be so difficult to find, and more than that, no one told us that will not have a good soul to love and protect us. LIFE CAN BE SO HARD SOMETIMES!!!

Signed: Us

PLEASE GO TO RAR's PHOTO DIARY PAGE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS OF OUR FAMILY!!

Here we are eating the food Geo and Viorel has brought for us. Here are close-ups of some of us brothers and sisters. Here we are roughhousing among broken glass, pull-can tops, and garbage.

UPDATE: HELP LABUS SHELTER FOR DOGS; SOME HORSES ARE NOW BEING HELPED!

Here are some photos from Help Labus in Galati. They are building a shelter for the dogs, and are now able to care for some of the horses! RAR was able to send them some medicine for the horses, and Nancy intends to bring more horse medicine when she comes to Romania in May.

Dear Nancy and RAR donors,

We thank you once again for the medicine you have sent to us; this happened in the most appropriate moment. We were asked by a lady to help a horse who was in great pain, maltreated by his owner, a gypsy man...For this horse ("Gica"), we have called the veterinarian who prescribed some medicine and we have bought it. He did not have shoes so we took him to a smith. This gipsy has a neighbor who has a mare who has no shoes, just like Gica. We helped this mare, too.

We know that is very important for them to have shoes due to the fact that they are over-demanded by their owners and run most part of the day. Unfortunately a horse with an injury could not be treated, he had a sedimentation of calcium.

His owner loves it but he cannot use it at his carriage. He asked us to help him with food from time to time. We hope there is a remedy that may help it.

It is a great happiness for us to be helped by you and we, in return, to help them!

Thank you!
Corina

DEDICATION: "WENDY"

"WENDY"

RAR's friend and dedicated supporter, Christina, lost her beloved "WENDY" in February of this year. Two weeks after Wendy was diagnosed with a heart murmur and mild kidney disease, she began an unexpectedly rapid decline and passed over on February 12, 2008.

Here is Wendy's story:

Wendy, a somewhat feral stray, hung around an auto dealership, where Christina's neighbor, Mr. Murphy, would feed her. Eventually he captured her and took her home. Wendy was terribly frightened, hissing at everyone--no one could come near her. His other cats, Katie and Bobby, would not let her into the kitchen, so she was fed outside on top of a wall. Barred from the house by the other cats, she endured very cold weather in the winter and soaking rainstorms.

Christina would feed Mr. Murphy's cats when he went out of town, then in 2003 the family asked Christina to look in on their father, Mr. Murphy, and also feed the cats. Well, Wendy became so happy to see Christina that she came running! Christina would stay with her while she ate--she was the ONLY person Wendy trusted. When Mr. Murphy passed away in July 2005, Christina took in Wendy and Bobby (a 3-legged cat, due to an accident) as the family would have euthanized them, and continued to feed Wendy outside. In November 2006 Christina was able to capture Wendy and bring her into her home, where she was very frightened at the change, hiding in closets for many days. But, eventually, she came out.

Wendy soon turned into a true "lap cat" for, no matter where she was in the house, Wendy ALWAYS KNEW when Christina sat down--in seconds, she would come running and jump into her lap! And when Bobby quietly tried to tip-toe his way onto the chair next to Christina, Wendy would become jealous, no doubt remembering how he used to treat her!

One day Christina knew something was wrong, and took her to the vet where she was diagnosed with a heart murmur and mild kidney disease. In just two weeks, Wendy's health went quickly downhill, and she passed away quietly with Christina at her side. As Donna and Ray, friends of Christina and of Wendy said, "the time we have with our animals becomes enormously more special when, at some point in their feral lives, they decide to allow human contact after so many years in the wild."

Wendy had a very hard life, but she was truly a loving, caring soul, who in her autumn years, was able to find and share a deep love and bond with Christina. Christina, the only person Wendy ever trusted, misses her every day and every night, but holds so much love in her heart from their years together, she will never be forgotten!

All of us at RAR share your sorrow, Christina, at your loss, and your joy at sharing Wendy's life!

"Wendy" (2005) Wendy and Bobby (keeping a 'comfortable' and peaceful distance!) Flowers grow over Wendy's resting place in Christina's garden.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP

CAR DONATION PROGRAM Reminder, RAR NOW HAS THE ABILITY TO ACCEPT VEHICLES AS DONATIONS! (Only available in CA) Contact Nancy Janes via email for details.

HELP the animals and receive HOPE - Introducing Animal Welfare to Romania (our new photo book)!

SEE OTHER WAYS TO HELP, VOLUNTEER AND DONATE.

Dear Friends and Supporters of RAR and the animals of Romania,

It is only WITH YOUR HELP that we are able, step by step, day by day, to bring animal welfare to the animals, and the people, of Romania. What we have accomplished to date is incredible, what we have planned for the future is attainable - with support from our wonderful donors.

WITH YOUR HELP we have prevented the births of hundreds of thousands of stray dogs and cats, made life better for the animals, through education and training; and introduced the compassion that we all have for the animals, most of whom we will never meet, to people who never dreamed any of this could be a reality in their country!

WITH YOUR HELP, our dreams--and the dreams of thousands of stray, hungry, lonely, loving animals in Romania--will come true.

WITH WARMEST REGARDS,
NANCY JANES
Founder

ALTHOUGH RELOCATING ANIMALS TO THE USA IS NOT OUR PURPOSE, we feel it is necessary to help the animals who are alive in Romania as best we can, while preventing their births in the first place. We hope that someday in the near future Romania will be in a position to care for its own dogs, but currently, this is not the case. Please remember to adopt animals in your local shelters in the USA, who need loving homes as well!
